Splash and Ripple! Precipice Theatre Summer 2000 production
Splash & Ripple was produced to support the "Living By Water Project" a network of naturalist and other conservation minded groups working towards healthier human and wildlife habitat along the shorelines of Canada. The Living by Water Project is a national millennium project endorsed by the Millennium Bureau of Canada. |
SPLASH & RIPPLE is an original play, created in July of 2000 to honour and celebrate our connection with natural waterways and shorelines. The play was developed in support of the Living By Water Project, a national initiative of naturalist groups and other conservation organizations interested in focusing attention on important shoreline areas -- our "ribbons of life", which are critical for both humans and wildlife.
The play is a musical comedy journey along the shoreline of a river, lake, wetland, ocean and our imagination. With a cast of 14 - children, young adults and seniors - the play is both highly informative and entertaining. The company utilized colourful inflatable sets, large-scale puppets, mask, music and humour to inspire audience members to environmental action at a local level.
During the Banff run, the play was performed near the banks of the Bow river to highlight the need for restoring shoreline habitat in the Banff Townsite. Guest speakers and information was on site to encourage the public to get involved with the proposed Bow River Shoreline Park development in Banff. Additional components of the presentation included, pre-performance guest speakers, post-performance audience discussion and the distribution of environmental educational materials, as well as Eco-beach Volleyball before each show!
In partnership with the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies, "SPLASH & RIPPLE" was performed outdoors at the museum's riverside lawn during July as part of the summer Theatre-In-The-Park Schedule & Highlights series for 2000. Audience members were encouraged to bring a lawn chair or blanket to sit on, although bleacher seating was available. All performances were "pay-what-you-can". From July 31st to September 24th Precipice Theatre hit the road and toured the production through out Alberta & BC. 2000 Tour Schedule and Highlights.
Financial support for "SPLASH & RIPPLE" is made possible from The Living By Water Project through a grant from the Canada Millennium Partnership Program, The Friends of Banff Park, Alberta Foundation for the Arts, the George Weaver Memorial Fund, local Banff Businesses and Precipice Theatre members.
